Tutor Biography:
Molly McCloskey is the author of two short story collections – Solomon’s Seal and The Beautiful Changes. Her stories have won prizes, including Ireland’s RTE/Francis MacManus Award. Her first novel, Protection, was published in 2005, and her first full-length work of non-fiction, Circles Around the Sun: In Search of a Lost Brother – a memoir about her brother’s schizophrenia and its effects on him and on the family – will be published by Penguin Ireland in June 2011. She has served as Writer Fellow at Trinity College Dublin, where she taught non-fiction. As a journalist, essayist and reviewer, she is a regular contributor to the Irish Times and the Dublin Review, writing on topics as diverse as politics; basketball; class reunions; and swing dancing.
Course Theme:
This course will look at various kinds of non-fiction writing - memoir, personal essay, travel, reportage, or work that combines elements of these forms. Students will be asked to read two to three short pieces of non-fiction prose by established writers, which will be circulated in advance of the first class. The bulk of the course will be dedicated to discussing student writing. Each student will have the chance to read one piece of his or her own work-in-progress, after which the class will discuss the student’s work.
Conditions:
Places are limited to 15 per workshop.
Admission will be by selection based on submitted work. Submissions are now being accepted.
You should submit the memoir/non-fiction piece you wish to work on in class. This sample, whether an excerpt from something longer or a complete piece of writing, should not exceed approximately 1,500 words and must be submitted by July 15th.
