Sunday Miscellany has always done a fantastic job with the choice of accompanying music for its radio essays. Part of the pleasure of listening to that show is the absence of flabby introductions. The essays are interspersed with sympathetic musical interludes which really make the hour flow and fly by. Before you know it, the rashers and coffee are finished and the familiar jaunty brass theme is signalling the end of another uplifting show. Your Sunday is well and truly kick-started and you’re ready for anything (the Sunday papers, in my case). Anyone who has seen Sunday Misc live will know that the music works equally well onstage but this year producer, Cliodhna ni Anluain, has surpassed herself by securing the services of the mellifluous-voiced Planxty stalwart, the great Andy Irvine. Nice one Cliodhna!
