Denis Johnston

Denis Johnston was born in Ballsbridge in 1901. One of the most under-rated of Irish playwrights among Johnston’s plays are The Moon in the Yellow River, The Old Lady Says No and The Scythe and the Sunset.

During World War II Johnston was BBC Radio War Correspondent covering fields of battle in Africa, Italy and Yugoslavia. After years lecturing he moved to Dalkey. He lived at 8 Sorrento Terrace and there he wrote reviews and articles for newspapers while finishing his philosophical work, The Brazen Horn and revising several of his plays.
After Sorrento Terrace he moved to Adelaide Road.

He died in 1984 and is buried in St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
