Dún Laoghaire Rathdown (DLR) is not a name that trips off the literary tongue. DLR is not Bloomsbury, the Parisian Left Bank or the Village in New York. Or isn’t it?
DLR has been the birthplace and inspiration for many of Ireland’s most influential, entertaining and popular writers.
From James Joyce to Samuel Beckett, George Bernard Shaw to Flann O’Brien, Hugh Leonard to J. M. Synge and from Denis Johnston to LAG Strong it is unrivalled for its historic literature.
Wonderful contemporary writers from this area include Maeve Binchy, Joseph O’Connor, Julie Parsons, Colum McCann, Hugo Hamilton, Marian Keyes, Bernard Farrell, Declan Hughes, Martina Devlin, Sarah Webb, Paul Murray and Ross O’Carroll Kelly.
In 2004 Tim Carey, Heritage Officer, produced ‘Blooming Lit’ to celebrate the Centenary of Bloomsday. It explored, highlighted and celebrated the unique literary landscape of DLR. To view the ‘Blooming Lit’ exhibition panels’ please click here.
