Val McDermid In Conversation with Declan Hughes
Val McDermid grew up in a Scottish mining community then read English at Oxford. Before becoming a crime writer, she was a journalist for 16 years, spending the last three as Northern Bureau Chief of a national Sunday tabloid. Since then, she has written 22 crime novels, which have sold over 10 million copies, making her one of the most successful and popular international writers in contemporary publishing.
Val has won many awards internationally, including the CWA Gold Dagger for best crime novel of the year and the LA Times Book of the Year Award. She was inducted into the ITV3 Crime Thriller Awards Hall of Fame in 2009 and is the recipient of the CWA Cartier Diamond Dagger for 2010. Her new novel, The Retribution, concerns a serial killer who has shaped police profiler Tony Hill’s life, a serial killer with the power to chill him to the bone. Now Jacko Vance is back in Tony’s life, focused on wreaking revenge on Tony for the years he has spent in prison.
Declan Hughes is a best-selling Edgar-nominated crime writer and the author of the Ed Loy PI series. He lives in Dún Laoghaire with his wife and two daughters.
