The Book of Books: Melvyn Bragg

Melvyn Bragg's account of the bible, The Book of Books: The Radical Impact of the King James Bible 1611-2011, reveals the extraordinary impact of a work created 400 years ago. Its influence on social movements - particularly involving women in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries - and politics was profound. It was crucial to the growth of democracy, it was integral to the abolition of slavery and it defined attitudes to modern science, education and sex. Since its publication in 1611 The King James Bible has been the bestselling book in the world and perhaps the greatest influence on the enrichment of the English language and its literature.
'Bragg's strengths as a novelist yield an account that is personal and imaginative, full of excitement and energy...I have never read an account of the Bible quite so compelling.' (David Crystal, The New Statesman )
Melvyn Bragg has written several works of non-fiction as well as his best-selling novels, and his career as a writer, broadcaster and champion of the arts in the media is unmatched. He is President of the National Campaign for the Arts and Mind, and in 1998 he was made a life peer.
